The Book of Boba Fett, Episode 1, Stranger in a Strange Land review: Robert Rodriguez plays it safe in ordinary opening chapter

Image
The Book of Boba Fett, Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land Director  – Robert Rodriguez Cast  – Temuera Morrison, Ming-Na Wen Rating  – 2.5/5 With little plot progression and minimal momentum, the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett, the second live-action  Star Wars  series on Disney+, is an ordinary half-hour that is let down by the man chosen to direct it. After hustling for so many years, Robert Rodriguez found himself in the rather impressive position of not having to go hat in hand to Hollywood anymore, but having Hollywood come to him. He’s spent the better part of the last decade making movies in his own backyard, using green screen soundstages and a scrappy mentality that gives him and his investors a bang for their buck. This makes Rodriguez, in a rather roundabout manner, the ideal candidate to lead the directorial team on a Star Wars show filmed entirely during a pandemic, on state-of-the-art digital sets. Having re-introduced the fan-favourite bounty hunter in that

Republic movie is real story or not

Image
The recent Telugu film  Tuck Jagadish  showed actor Nani as a Mandal Revenue Officer. In  Republic , the Telugu film directed by Deva Katta and slated to release in theatres on October 1, actor Sai Dharam Tej plays a District Collector who stands his ground despite political pressures. The hero as an agent of change and the good versus evil battle is not new, but Deva Katta hopes  Republic  can challenge people’s understanding of democracy. Republic  pits Sai Dharam Tej against a powerful politician played by Ramya Krishna. “Most of us don’t have a deep understanding of terms such as autocracy, democracy, socialism, communism or capitalism. We live in a democracy without truly understanding what it entails,” he says. He does not nurture romantic notions that cinema can spark a change in society, but believes that a well thought-out story can make people understand the root cause of problems. The director reflects on his journey before elaborating on the film. Born in Kadapa in Andhra

Minnal Murali Movie Review: A delightful possible new direction in how we tell superhero story

Image
Movie:  Minnal Murali Director:  Basil Joseph Starring:  Tovino Thomas, Guru Somasundaram, Femina George. Rating:  4/5 Review by  Arjun Menon. The screenplay smartly lays down a very original pathway for future films involving richly etched out origin stories that tries to match foreign caped crusaders tales not with fancy budgets but with nuances, natively resonant human stories wrapped within the genre pleasures. The superhero genre has always alluded the psyche of Indian storytellers in its ambitious, mainly due inability to lend nativity to the western gaze of the narrative designs we are used to in our tentpole Hollywood productions. Finally, a movie from India has figured out a way to make a rooted, culturally echoing portrait of the masked crusader. Minnal Murali has been in the talks for a long period of time and made its much-awaited premiere today on Netflix and the curse of the fidgeting Indian superhero space seems to be lifted. The highly stylized superhero drama gets it

Cast:   Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Addinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa and R Badree Director:  Kabir Khan Rating:  4 Stars (out of 5) Once upon a time in India, cricket and cinema were the two great national glues. It was 1983. The gentleman's game was just that and the men who played it were part of a time-honoured tradition that placed upon them the responsibility of turning out in their white flannels not to profit but to prosper as sportsmen. No team took that ideal to heart quite as enthusiastically as India, which lifted the 1983 World Cup after having returned win from the first two editions of the limited-overs tournament with a solitary victory (against a cobbled-up East Africa). The dramatic triumph signalled the coming of age of Indian cricket in a manner that nobody, not even the skipper himself or the men who ran

Atrangi Re Review

Cast:   Sara Ali Khan, Dhanush, Akshay Kumar, Ashish Verma, Dimple Hayathi, Seema Biswas Director:  Aanand L Rai Rating:  2 stars (out of 5) Aanand L. Rai's  Atrangi Re  has an unusual premise all right. But try as hard as it and A.R. Rahman's lively musical score may, the love story is unable to convert its pivotal plot twist into anything more than a single-trick show. The gossamer-thin storyline strains credibility. But that is the least of the film's problems. It also takes an appallingly cavalier stance on mental trauma and its long-term effects. One character in  Atrangi Re  (streaming on Disney+Hotstar) declares that nobody has ever understood psychological disorders. The film takes that assertion at face value and spins a flimsy yarn around it, totally unmindful of the fact that it only trivialises the pain of a mind in need of succour. Dhanush, who plays a Tamil boy in his final year in a Delhi medical college, is wonderfully nimble in a role that requires him to
